IBM Corp. said Monday it is developing a computer system code-named Watson that will compete with humans on the TV show "Jeopardy."
IBM said its scientists have been working on an advanced computing system for two years that will be able to understand complex questions and answer with enough precision and speed to compete on the popular TV quiz show.
Competing against humans on the show will be a grand challenge, IBM said, because of the variety of subject matter, the speed at which contestants must provide accurate responses, and because the clues given to contestants involve analyzing subtle meaning, irony, riddles, and other complexities at which humans excel and computers traditionally do not.
