The Hawaii Legislature on Friday overrode Gov. Linda Lingle’s vetoes of four bills that raise tax rates on hotel rooms, high-income earners, luxury home transactions and tobacco.
Lingle, a Republican, vetoed the measures on Thursday, saying the tax hikes would discourage travel to Hawaii, lead to further job losses, and delay Hawaii’s economic recovery.
But the Legislature, controlled by Democrats, rejected the governor’s proposals, arguing that the state urgently needs to raise money to close a huge budget gap caused by the evaporation of more than $2 billion in tax revenue in the past year.
