A monster oyster plucked from the seabed and nicknamed Shelly has been saved from the dining table because of its huge size.
The creature, three times the size of an average British edible oyster, was discovered in the bottom of a box of fish bought by a Cornish fishmonger, Peter Randall.
It measures 18cm (7ins) across and weighs 1.36kg (3lbs), apparently the largest recorded in British waters. The previous largest, found in Scotland, weighed 0.83kg (1.8lbs).
