Swine flu is expected to spread more rapidly and extensively in Japan after the virus reached Tokyo, one of the world’s most populous metropolitan areas, with 35 million people.

Two high school students were confirmed as the first two swine flu patients in Tokyo Wednesday. The two girls are students of Senzoku Gakuen High School in Kawasaki who traveled with four other schoolmates and a teacher to attend a United Nations-related event held in New York from May 11 to May 18. One of the girls, a 16-year-old who lives in Hachioji, western Tokyo, was diagnosed with the new flu strain upon her return from the U.S. trip, according to Kyodo News.
