A man charged with murdering a doctor who carried out late-term abortions will face a mandatory life sentence, not the death penalty, if convicted. Scott Roeder, 51, appeared in court accused of killing Dr George Tiller with a single gunshot on Sunday at the Lutheran church in Wichita, Kansas. Under Kansas law, the death penalty can be carried out only for the killing of a police or jail official, more than one person, someone kidnapped for ransom, or during a rape. Dr Tiller had survived an earlier shooting and had his clinic bombed by anti-abortion protesters. Roeder was denied bail.
