mps must set example on pensions

When the recriminations and resignations end, and MPs finally get around to reforming the expenses system, the opportunity also to overhaul parliamentary pensions should not be missed.

While many of their constituents have been warned that they will have to put off retirement or face penury in retirement, politicians benefit from one of the most generous final-salary schemes in the world.

Over time, the sums of public money involved in propping up this pensions aristocracy will far eclipse the expense claims that have aroused anger over recent weeks.
