The Scottish National party have been unofficially declared as winners of the popular vote in the Scottish region of the European elections, with Labour expected to slump to a poor second.
The first set of early results put the SNP ahead: they won most votes in East Lothian, West Lothian, Clackmannanshire, and Perth and Kinross, but Labour managed to hold Fife, by just 0.2% of the vote.
But with more than two thirds of Scotland's 32 councils still to declare tonight – and the final Western Isles result not declared until Monday morning – the parties are still watching the Liberal Democrats.
