A farmer who left 114 emaciated horses, ponies and donkeys to die was jailed for 24 weeks yesterday.

In one of the country's worst ever cases of animal cruelty, James Gray, 45, was also ordered to pay £400,000 costs to the RSPCA.

He must sell 40-acre Spindle Farm near Amersham and his horses to meet the costs if he has to, the District Judge Andrew Vickers ordered.

The packed public gallery at Aylesbury magistrates court applauded as Gray was taken down to the cells.
