TJX and 42 states settle over data security breach

Florida and 41 other states have reached a $9.75 million settlement with the parent company of several retail chains, after a 2006 security breach that exposed the personal identification information from tens of millions of transactions at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and A.J. Wright stores.

Parent company TJX will dedicate $5.5 million for state data and consumer protection efforts and $1.75 million will be paid to states for the cost of the investigation. The remaining $2.5 million will be used to create data security trust funds for state attorneys general. Florida's share is about $524,000.
