Retiring Manhattan DA Morgenthau endorses ex-assistant Cyrus Vance Jr. to replace him

NEW YORK - Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, who is retiring, is endorsing a former deputy in the race to replace him.

Cyrus Vance Jr. served as a prosecutor under Morgenthau during the 1980s and is now in private practice. His father, Cyrus Vance Sr., was secretary of state under President Jimmy Carter.

The race is shaping up to be more competitive than the one for New York City mayor. Also running in the Sept. 15 Democratic primary are former state Supreme Court Justice Leslie Crocker Snyder and former Assistant District Attorney Richard Aborn (AY'-born).
