Music history books tell us that the major pre-MTV tube moments are the debuts of Elvis and the Beatles on "The Ed Sullivan Show." But for black baby boomers like me, the Jackson 5's appearance on "The Hollywood Palace" is every bit as important and game changing.

On that ABC variety show, on the evening of Oct. 18, 1969, the Jackson 5 made their national television debut. For me, an 11-year-old in predominantly black Gary, Ind., this was huge: These guys lived just blocks from the house I grew up in; my big brothers had played Little League with older members Jackie and Tito Jackson. Friends and relatives had cheered them at local talent shows. My family had bought the group's independently produced debut single "Big Boy."
