Lord Mandelson announced this morning that the bienniel spending review will not be conducted until after the next General election despite a series of calls from economic groups for more transparency over the public finances.
Speaking as Gordon Brown prepared to unveil plans to press on with high levels of spending, despite warnings about public debt, the Business Secretary said that there was no "need" to come up with new departmental budgets until 2011.
