Labour selects by-election candidate who works for John Lewis

The party chose Chris Ostrowski for the contest, triggered by the resignation of Dr Ian Gibson following the expenses row.

Dr Gibson opted to quit immediately this month after Labour's "Star Chamber" panel barred him from standing at the next general election.

The Daily Telegraph revealed two weeks ago that he had allowed his daughter to stay rent-free in his tax-payer funded flat in west London.

John Lewis came to symbolise the expenses culture of Westminster after its prices were used to benchmark the redecoration and refurbishment claims of MPs. House of Commons officials referred to the suggested prices for furniture and household items as 'the John Lewis list'.
