As a shameless freeloader and champion of an arrogant and avaricious political class, Speaker Michael Martin was driven from office because he exemplified everything the public found shocking about the MPs' expenses scandal.
It was he who tried to suppress publication of the MPs' claims, and he was being punished, we were told, as a gesture of atonement to an enraged people. His departure would mark the start of the great Westminster clean-up.
