Detroit Mayor Dave Bing unveiled Warren Evans, the departing Wayne County sheriff, as his choice for the city's police chief today, following Bing's surprise dismissal last week of Chief James Barren.
Appearing at a news conference in the mayor's office, Bing said Evans has the knowledge of the city and skills to restructure the department so that it can get a handle on the violent crime that has long plagued Detroit.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has fired Police Chief James Barren and plans to hire Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans as the new chief, according to an assistant police chief who also is leaving the force.
