Michael Jackson's family and friends gathered for a private funeral service at a Hollywood Hills cemetery this morning, two hours before a star-studded memorial extravaganza is scheduled to start at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.
As fans and the entertainment elite began finding their seats at the basketball arena for the televised memorial, which will begin at 10 a.m. Pacific time (1 p.m. in Washington), a long line of black cars and SUVs pulled up outside the Hall of Liberty at the Forest Lawn cemetery. The motorcade traveled under police escort, and wire services reported that authorities shut sections of some freeways during the rush hour to allow the procession to pass.
