Funerals aren't about delivering performances. They're about expressing emotion.
So perhaps it's forgivable - if no less disappointing - that a man considered by many to be the world's greatest showman got such a wobbly musical sendoff Tuesday.
The memorial for Michael Jackson at the Staples Center never lacked for earnest intent, but rarely did it have the verve, shape or care of Jackson's most important performances.
