A TRAGIC firefighter was hailed a hero last night after he laid down his life to save residents from a pub inferno.
Brave Ewan Williamson, 35, was crushed when the floor collapsed as he battled the ferocious blaze at Edinburgh’s Balmoral Bar.
Another fireman was hurt in the massive operation to rescue 20 people living in flats above the fire-ravaged pub.
Firefighters made a desperate bid to save their two pals, but Ewan died of his injuries after the floor gave way and plunged into the pub’s cellar.
