The defence secretary, Bob Ainsworth, today said providing better equipment to soldiers in Afghanistan would not stop lives being put at risk.
Faced with Tory complaints that the government was not providing the armed forces with enough helicopters, Ainsworth told MPs British soldiers were engaged in "hand to hand fighting" with the Taliban and helicopters and armoured vehicles could not always protect them.
