SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The head of the Illinois RepublicanParty says he won't run for the U.S. Senate if Rep. Mark Kirkdecides to run.
The announcement Monday from Andrew McKenna reduces the chancesof a major Republican primary battle. That could prompt Kirk toenter the race, a possibility he has been considering for months.
Kirk is a moderate Republican from the Chicago suburbs. Manyparty leaders have urged him to run for the Senate or governor, buthe has been slow to decide.
