DES MOINES, Iowa - Des Moines officials say they intend tolimit the spread of homeless camps that have begun to appear alongthe Des Moines and Raccoon rivers.
Assistant City Manager Chris Johansen says the effort is beingprompted by fears a failure to enforce city regulations could leadto more problems with safety, health and sanitation.
City officials estimate about 175 people, a small percentage ofthe estimated homeless population of about 1,500, live in homelesscamps in the metro area. Officials say the small percentage isoften among the most difficult to help.
