Jerome, 62, and his wife Hazel, 60, refused to leave two houses, leaving owners thousands of pounds out of pocket, Huntingdon Crown Court heard.
Jerome, a former minicab driver, was given a 15-month prison term after admitting fraud and deception.
His wife, an ex-primary school teacher, was given a 10-month term suspended for two years after admitting fraud.
Prosecutors said the couple launched their scam after being evicted from their rented home in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, three years ago.
