Iran’s most influential powerbroker defied the Supreme Leader and used Friday prayers to declare the Islamic Republic “in crisis” yesterday as tens of thousands of protesters staged the largest show of dissent in weeks.

Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the leading cleric and former President, told a crowd at Tehran University that the regime had lost the people’s trust with the way it handled last month’s disputed presidential election and had endangered the principles on which the Islamic Revolution was founded.
