NEWARK -- Three people were killed, including a mother of two described as an innocent bystander, and five others were injured this afternoon in two separate shootings just hours apart in Newark, authorities and witnesses said.

The mother, Nakisha Allen, 35, of Newark, was killed outside her apartment house on Elizabeth Avenue near Weequahic Park, a predominantly residential area of the city with stately homes and apartment buildings.
