The US army is to recruit 22,000 new soldiers to help it fight the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the defence secretary has said.

The increased troop strength, which Robert Gates said would only be for three years, will raise the total number of soldiers to 569,000.

"The army faces a period where its ability to deploy combat units at acceptable fill rates is at risk," Gates told reporters on Monday.

"This is a temporary challenge which will peak in the coming year and abate over the course of the next three years."
