Lance Armstrong was careful from the start to lower expectations, even as his relentless legs promised much more at the Tour de France. He warned everyone there was too much rust, too many rings around his trunk at age 37. At the same time, he stuck near the top of the standings, challenging his own teammate, Alberto Contador, right through the team and time trials and then up and down the Pyrenees.

BESANCON, France (AP) Serguei Ivanov of Russia won the 14th stage of the Tour de France. Saturday's ride was marked by the death of a fan who was hit by a police motorcycle escorting the cyclists.
