Missing ship reported off Cape Verde islands

The search for the cargo ship thought to have disappeared in European waters after allegedly being attacked by pirates switched to the west African coast today after unconfirmed reports that it had been sighted in the Atlantic.

A ship resembling the Arctic Sea, which was carrying £1.3m of timber and 15 Russian crew, was reportedly spotted 400 nautical miles off one of the Cape Verde islands, west of Senegal, according to a spokesman for the French defence ministry, Jerome Baroe. He said details had been relayed to authorities in Russia and Malta, where the ship is registered.
