Mandelson speech rouses Labour

BRIGHTON (AFP) – Business Secretary Peter Mandelson sought to galvanise the embattled Labour Party on Monday, telling its conference that it could still win next year's general election.

Mandelson insisted the election was "not cut and dried", despite opinion polls showing Labour are trailing the opposition Conservatives by up to 15 points with the country to vote by June.

Labour were the "underdogs", but "this election is up for grabs," Mandelson said, in a rousing speech which lifted the atmosphere in Brighton after a flat start to the second day of the annual conference.
