When Google and Yahoo proposed to team up on search ads last year, large swaths of the advertising industry balked, saying it would give Google too much power and would forestall competition.
The Association of National Advertisers, which represents some of the nation's biggest marketers, became a leading opponent of the agreement. The American Association of Advertising Agencies and the International Advertising Association also wrote letters to government officials expressing concern. Eventually Google abandoned the deal after the Justice Department vowed to sue to block it.
