Bernard Madoff's bean counter pleaded guilty Tuesday today to approving the swindler's financial statements for years, but claimed to be clueless about the $65 billion Ponzi scheme.
Accountant David Friehling confessed that from 1991 until the scheme collapsed last December, he never audited financial statements of Madoff's firm before filing them with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Taking Madoff's word at face value, prosecutors said, helped shield the sham from government investigators.
