Democrats lose ground in US polls

Mr McDonnell has ended a decade of Democrat rule in Virginia

US Democrats have lost ground in two key elections for governor, according to unofficial results.

Republican candidate Bob McDonnell has won in Virginia, while the race in the Democrat heartland of New Jersey is said to be too close to call.

The results are being seen as a test of the two parties' standings one year after President Obama was elected.
