Into U.S. Speedskating's bleak financial picture, a hero appeared from out of the blue. About a week ago, Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central's "Colbert Report," read about the team losing its major sponsor when the Dutch bank DSB went bankrupt. That left a $300,000 hole in U.S. Speedskating's budget just a few months before the Olympics.
So Colbert proposed having "Colbert Nation" sponsor the team. He announced the move Monday night on his show, with the former Olympian Dan Jansen as his guest and with U.S. Speedskating's executive director, Bob Crowley, ready to hand him a sponsorship agreement to sign.
