Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, has called again for a complete freeze in Israeli settlement activity in the occupied West Bank in an apparent attempt to clarify earlier comments on the issue.
Clinton called the settlements illegitimate on Wednesday after talks with Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president, in Cairo, her last stop on a tour of the region.
"We do not accept the legitimacy of settlement activity and we have a very firm belief that ending all settlement activity, current and future, would be preferable," Clinton said.
