Stocks opened higher Thursday as filings for jobless benefits declined to the lowest level in 10 months last week.
Just after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 111 points, or 1.1%, to 9913. Gains were lead by Cisco Systems, which rose 2.5% after the networking gear's better-than-expected first-quarter report.
Technology was broadly strong, further helped by a stock buyback by Research In Motion, which recently traded up 2.5%.
