Hurricane Ida threatens Nicaragua

Miami, Florida (CNN) -- The storm known as Ida became a hurricane Thursday, strengthening from tropical storm status, as it neared Nicaragua's eastern coast.

Forecasters said Ida, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and gusts up to 85 mph (135 kph), was expected to make landfall Thursday morning.

Flash floods and mudslides in Nicaragua and Honduras are expected to be the biggest dangers. Because Ida is a slow-moving storm, rainfall totals could approach 30 inches in some locations, meteorologists said.
