Stocks maintained the day's broad-based gains Thursday afternoon asinvestors welcomed upbeat news on earnings and the economy while also lookingahead to jobs data that could highlight one of the U.S. economy's persistentweak points.
Major stock indexes have traded in positive territory since the opening bell,though momentum and trading activity have dried up as the afternoon hasprogressed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) has flirted with the closelywatched 10,000 level for most of the session, but it has failed to breakthrough, trading within seven points of the mark at the market's intraday high.
