The Yankees' Peaceful, Easy Feeling

The line that kept coming to me on Wednesday night as I tried to crystallize the Yankees’ 27th championship, was “peaceful, easy feeling,” from the song by the Eagles. Whether this was a subconscious yearning for my Philadelphia Eagles to someday win a championship, too, I don’t know. But I think the words fit the moment.

I have covered the Yankees for eight years. The last game for which I was not the beat writer was Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, in Arizona, characterized by my predecessor, Buster Olney, as “The Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty.” I knew I would be covering the Yankees in 2002 and beyond, and I remembered thinking that their great run would end sometime, and I would be reporting on the dynasty’s decay.
