David Cameron urged to sack EU rebels

He was warned that not standing up to the party’s Euro-sceptic wing could cost the Conservatives the General Election.

Roger Helmer and Daniel Hannan stood down from their Brussels position in protest at Mr Cameron’s refusal to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. Mr Helmer said he could “neither justify nor support” the plans set out by Mr Cameron.

That defiance has led to Edward McMillan-Scott to call for the two to be formally expelled. Mr McMillan-Scott led the party in Brussels until Mr Cameron forced him to leave the party after he objected to the Tory leader’s decision to switch to a new grouping in the European Parliament.
