Jobless Figures Escalate Political Fight on Economic Priorities

Nov. 6 (Bloomberg) -- A government report that the U.S.unemployment rate hit a 26-year high of 10.2 percent sparked newpolitical clashes between Democrats who supported governmentspending to stimulate the economy and Republicans who want taxcuts.

Republicans said rising unemployment proved that a $787billion economic stimulus, which was opposed by all of theparty’s members in the House, wasn’t working and that Congressshould instead cut taxes.
