Updated After months of work by Congressional Democrats on major health care legislation, the floor debate on the bill was at risk of being overshadowed on Saturday by a fierce internal dispute among Democrats over the issue of insurance coverage for abortions.
Always a politically volatile issue, the fight over provisions related to abortion coverage had simmered quietly for weeks. It had not always been in the spotlight but it remained in the background as party leaders struggled to broker a compromise to advance the bill.
