Reporting from Los Angeles and Washington - The House kicked off a contentious debate on healthcare legislation as Democratic Party leaders appeared confident they had enough votes to bring the measure to the floor later today.
President Obama made a personal appeal, visiting with Democrats as the House began to discuss the bill in a rare Saturday session.
"We will vote today on the floor of the House of Representatives," Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, of Maryland, said after the session with the president. Obama left without speaking but is scheduled to make comments later when he leaves for Camp David.
