Before he became president of the University of St. Thomas, Robert Ivany spent more than three decades in the Army, including serving in 1995 as an assistant division commander at Fort Hood.
Ivany said he was speechless when he first learned of the mass shooting on the post.
"It's just a tragedy in so many different ways," Ivany said Friday. "We mourn for them and we pray for them."
While some people have questioned why a single gunman was able to kill so many combat-hardened troops, Ivany said soldiers on posts in the United States normally carry weapons only during training exercises.
