CAMDEN, N.J. - Charges have been dropped or convictions vacated in 185 drug cases in one of the nation's most crime-ridden cities because information gathered in a criminal investigation of five police city officers suggests evidence could have been tainted, a prosecutor announced Friday.

One of the officers pleaded guilty in federal court Friday to conspiring with other officers to deprive others of their civil rights. Kevin Parry, who has resigned from the department, admitted he planted drugs on suspects.

BURBANK, Calif. - It's been nearly three months since Brittany Murphy died at age 32. And in that time, more questions than answers have been raised about the actress and her husband, Simon Monjack.

But in a new interview with Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson, Monjack set the record straight on the rumors surrounding his relationship with his late wife.

The first topic Monjack addressed was the parallels some people have suggested between Murphy's death and the death of Corey Haim.

A combination of drugs that researchers hoped would delay progression to diabetes and/or heart disease in people with impaired glucose tolerance provided little benefit, researchers reported Sunday at an Atlanta meeting of the American College of Cardiology. The findings were the second disappointing diabetes-related study at the meeting. A major study of intensively lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels also found little benefit from the drugs and a potential for harm.

- VYTORIN STUDY: A safety monitoring board doing a planned interim analysis of a long study of Merck's Vytorin cholesterol pill decided there are no serious safety problems, so the study can continue.

ANALYSTS' TAKE: That result was generally expected, and Vytorin sales likely will keep declining because of competition from rival drugs and generic versions in the same drug class.

WHAT'S AT STAKE: If the study doesn't prove that pricey Vytorin prevents heart attacks and strokes better than one of its components, a cheap generic pill, Vytorin sales will drop even more.

PHOENIX -- Authorities in Arizona say rapper DMX has been arrested for allegedly violating his probation by using drugs.

DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, had served about half of his 18-month supervised probation when he was booked Tuesday night into the downtown Phoenix jail. The rapper was released from jail in May after serving a 90-day sentence for felony convictions including cruelty to animals, theft and two drug counts.

MINNEAPOLIS, Maine, March 9 (UPI) -- Non-traditional techniques are effective in reducing pain in hospitalized patients, U.S. researchers say.

The therapies did not involve medication and were observed to relieve pain as much as 50 percent in a wide range of hospitalized patients.

"Roughly 80 percent of patients report moderate to severe pain levels after surgery," a study author, Dr. Gregory Plotnikoff of the Penny George Institute for Health and Healing at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, said in a statement.

THURSDAY, March 4 (HealthDay News) -- Kapidex (dexlansoprazole) has been given the new name Dexilant -- so approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration -- to avoid confusion with other drugs that have similar names.

There is no problem with Kapidex itself and, other than the name switch, nothing else will be changed about the drug, the FDA said. It's a proton pump inhibitor, used to treat heartburn and other conditions caused by excess stomach acid.

GUATEMALA CITY (AFP) – Guatemala's police chief and top anti-drug officer were arrested Tuesday for suspected links to drug traffickers and the murder of five policemen, an official source told AFP.

Police chief Baltazar Gomez and anti-drug division head Nelly Bonilla were arrested Tuesday during an "investigation into a drug robbery (in April 2009) in Amatitlan, which those detained today are believed to have participated in," said Attorney General Amilcar Velasquez.

Sources tell us, years before Brittany was married she wrote a holographic (handwritten) will, leaving everything to her mom. The will was stored in her manager's safe.

Brittany's husband, Simon Monjack, told TMZ after they got married Brittany had a formal will drafted, along with a trust. Simon tells us all of her assets under the new will and trust go to Sharon.

NEW YORK-Drugmaker Regulus Therapeutics LLC said Thursday it is expanding a partnership with GlaxoSmithKline, and will begin researching new treatments for hepatitis C.

Regulus said it will identify a potential drug candidate in late 2010, and file an application with the Food and Drug Administration in 2011. Regulus said it could get more than $150 million from the new collaboration, along with royalty payments of up to 10 percent on sales of any drugs developed under the agreement.

NEW YORK-Jay McGwire heard big brother Mark say last month he only took steroids to heal, and not to get stronger. That doesn't match Jay McGwire's recollection.

"Mark knew that he was going to get the strength and endurance and size. I know that the main motive to justify taking steroids was healing," Jay McGwire said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I know that for a fact. But in the long run he knew the strength and the size and endurance will increase. I don't know why he's coming across that it was all healing."

Feb. 17, 2010 - At least five "serious adverse events" occurred in people who took Maalox Total Relief thinking it was Maalox antacid, the FDA warns.

The two over-the-counter drugs are not the same. Maalox Total Relief contains bismuth subsalicylate, a drug with aspirin-like side effects that include stomach and intestinal bleeding. This drug should never be used by people with a history of gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding disorders.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Health providers who treat cancer patients with a class of anemia drugs will be required to trained in their use and document that they have informed patients of the risks, under guidelines approved by U.S. regulators.

PARIS-French drug maker Sanofi-Aventis on Wednesday reported a better-than-expected 10% rise in fourth-quarter net profit, spurred by sales of key drugs Lantus and Lovenox, as well as an extra boost from vaccines.

Afghan civilians have been warned to "keep their heads down" when US-led Nato forces launch a planned military offensive in southern Helmand province.

Mark Sedwill, Nato's senior civilian representative in Afghanistanm, admitted on Tuesday that fighting around the town of Marjah was likely to prompt an exodus from the area, but said that authorities were prepared to deal with it.

The offensive in the area, which is currently under the control of Taliban fighters, is expected to be one of the largest since the Taliban were forced from government in 2001.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The federal government advises throwing most unused or expired medications into the trash instead of down the drain, but they can end up in the water anyway, a study from Maine suggests.

Tiny amounts of discarded drugs have been found in water at three landfills in the state, confirming suspicions that pharmaceuticals thrown into household trash are ending up in water that drains through waste, according to a survey by the state's environmental agency that's one of only a handful to have looked at the presence of drugs in landfills.
