More than half of the country's 35 precincts had been counted Saturday afternoon, and initial results put the son of the former dictator ahead of his main <a href="http://www.mashget.com/topic/opposition/">opposition</a> challenger.

It said he won 48.95 percent in an election that saw nearly 70 percent turnout. Tymoshenko garnered 45.47 percent.
