BEIRUT, Lebanon (Reuters) - Search teams on Sunday retrieved flight recorders belonging to an Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed off the coast of Lebanon last month, killing all 90 people aboard.

The Lebanese transport minister, Ghazi Aridi, said navy commandos had also located parts of the plane's fuselage, where most of the victims' bodies are believed trapped. Eight bodies were recovered, bringing to 23 the number found since the crash.

BEIRUT - A U.S. Navy vessel has detected the flight recorders from a crashed Ethiopian Airlines jet at some 4,265 feet under the sea, the Lebanese army said Thursday.

The plane went down early Monday just minutes after takeoff from Beirut in a fierce storm. All 90 people on board were feared dead.

It could take days to retrieve the plane's flight recorders, which were located late Wednesday. The Lebanese army said in a statement that the USS Ramage and a civilian ship from Cyprus were scanning the area.

Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- The "black box" flight recorders from the Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed into the Mediterranean Sea after takeoff from Beirut Jan. 25 have been found, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported, citing Lebanese security officials.

The recorders have been located 10 kilometers west of Beirut and a search team is trying to retrieve them, the BBC said.

Search teams have located the black boxes from an Ethiopian aircraft that crashed off the Lebanese coast on Monday.

A Lebanese army officer said the flight recorders' signals had been detected and they appeared to be at a depth of about 1,300 metres and about 10km from Beirut's seaside airport.

But search teams have not yet been able to recover the boxes.

Lebanese and international search teams, a US naval vessel, and peacekeeping ships, helicopters, planes and divers from Europe and the UN, have been scouring the Mediterranean coast for the victims, plane's fuselage and flight data recorders.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A U.S. navy vessel located on Wednesday the flight recorders from an Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed off the coast of Lebanon two days ago with 90 people aboard, a security official said.

"The U.S. ship located the black boxes 1,300 meters underwater and 8 km west of Beirut airport," the security official told Reuters, adding that search teams now had to assess the best way to retrieve the recorders.

The "black box" flight recorders from a passenger jet which crashed off the coast of Lebanon two days ago have been found, officials say.

A search team located the recorders from the Ethiopian Airlines flight just over 1.3km (0.8 miles) underwater, 10km west of the capital, Beirut.

The search team is now trying to retrieve them, Lebanese security officials said.

BEIRUT (AFP) – Authorities are hopeful that the black boxes of an Ethiopian jet which crashed into the sea off Lebanon will be recovered on Wednesday in order to shed light on why the plane veered off course on take-off.

"The black boxes have not been localised but we have made enormous progress," an army spokesman told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"We are sounding the area where the plane went down and are making headway."

The recovery operation is continuing near the crash site

The Ethiopian jet which crashed into the sea off Beirut Monday did not fly in the direction suggested by Beirut's control tower, Lebanese officials say.

Ministers said the pilot of the Ethiopian Airlines jet was asked to correct his course, but turned in the opposite direction.

It is not clear why this happened, or if it was beyond the pilot's control.

An Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed into the sea off Beirut was probably brought down by bad weather, Lebanon's defence minister has said.

But Elias Murr said the cause of the crash could only be established after the flight recorders were recovered.

The Addis Ababa-bound flight plunged into the Mediterranean shortly after take-off from Beirut in a storm.

All 90 people on board the Boeing 737-800 are feared dead. At least 24 bodies have been pulled from the sea.

Brazil has called off the hunt for bodies and wreckage from an Air France jet that plunged into the Atlantic earlier this month with 228 people aboard. But the search for the “black boxes” that might explain what happened will continue.

Investigators are to present their first report into the disaster on Thursday but this is likely to be inconclusive without input from the flight recorders.

PARIS (Reuters) - The body of the pilot of an Air France plane that crashed into the Atlantic on June 1 has been identified among dozens that have been recovered from the ocean, the airline said Thursday.

All 228 people on board the Airbus 330 died when it crashed for unknown reasons during a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.

"Among the victims who have been recovered from the ocean, two members of the crew of flight AF 447 have been identified to date: the captain and a steward," Air France said in a statement posted on its website.

French military ships have reportedly detected signals from the black boxes of the doomed Air France flight that crashed into the Atlantic last month.

The French newspaper Le Monde reported this morning that a research mini-submarine, the Nautile, had dived to search for the flight recorders based on a "very weak signal". The report gave no source or other details.
