SAN JOSE, Calif. - Washington came into the NCAA Tournament with something to prove and a senior guard who could be playing in the NBA next year.

That combination has made the Huskies very dangerous, as Marquette learned in the first round and New Mexico found out Saturday.

The 11th-seeded Huskies, powered by swingman Quincy Pondexter and motivated by perceived disrespect from critics, completely destroyed the No. 3 Lobos, 82-64, to move into the Sweet 16 in the East Region.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Leading by one against the colossus of the bracket, Ali Farokhmanesh stood at the three-point line, no one around. The prudent play? Pull it out, burn some clock.

The biggest upset in a tournament full of them was done. Northern Iowa had taken down mighty Kansas.

Playing with poise down the stretch and getting another big three-pointer from Farokhmanesh, Northern Iowa pulled off one of the biggest NCAA upsets in years by knocking No. 1 overall seed Kansas from the bracket with a program-defining 69-67 win on Saturday.

Pondexter scored 18 points, Isaiah Thomas had 15 and 11th-seeded Washington extended its incredible late-season surge all the way to the NCAA tournament's regional semifinals with an 82-64 second-round victory over New Mexico on Saturday.

Matthew Bryan-Amaning had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Huskies (26-9), who have won nine straight, including the Pacific 10 Conference tournament and wins over two higher-seeded opponents in the East Regional.

The Cornell-Temple game stands out as the most significant result of the day, and I think the Michigan State-New Mexico game was probably the best game.

Kalin Lucas scored a career-high 25 points and a late lane-violation call helped lift fifth-seeded Michigan State past No. 12 New Mexico State, 70-67, Friday at Spokane, Wash., in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional.

The Aggies (22-12), who had rallied from 13 points down, were within 68-67 on a three-point shot by Troy Gillenwater with 20 seconds left.

But Gillenwater, who had 17 points, was called for a lane violation with 18.6 seconds left that allowed Raymar Morgan a second chance at making the second of his two free throws to put the Spartans (25-8) ahead 70-67.

Lucas finished with 25 points, despite tweaking his injured right ankle midway through the second half. He was 7-for-11 from the field and 8-for-12 from the free-throw line.

Although Darington Hobson's left wrist is sore and tender, he's determined to play with the pain for as long as New Mexico stays in the NCAA field.

"It's tournament time," said the Lobos' leader in points, rebounds and assists. "It's not going to affect me."

That's no longer a surprise to coach Steve Alford, who has watched his once-fragile star evolve into a player capable of coming back from hard hits such as the one that injured his wrist and tailbone during the third-seeded Lobos' (30-4) perilous first-round victory over Montana.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. ? Armon Bassett scored 32 points to help No. 14 seed Ohio beat Georgetown 97-83 and become the second team seeded in the teens to win in the NCAA tournament tonight.

The Mid-American Conference tournament champion Bobcats (22-14) took the lead early on their three-point shooting and were never seriously threatened by the Hoyas.

The Bobcats, their green-clad fans cheering them on the whole way, won their first tournament game in 27 years.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- After all of Darington Hobson's big talk about a deep NCAA tournament run for New Mexico, Montana nearly shut up the Lobos right away.

Roman Martinez had 19 points, six rebounds and four assists and third-seeded New Mexico overcame a shaky start to beat 14th-seeded Montana 62-57 in the NCAA tournament's East Regional on Thursday night.

Hobson added 11 points, 11 rebounds and six assists while playing with a sprained left wrist for the Lobos, who used a 17-0 run after halftime to briefly break open the game after trailing by a point at the break.

New Mexico forward Roman Martinez hit two key free throws with 13.5 seconds remaining as the No. 3 seed Lobos held off upset-minded No. 14 Montana 62-57 in the late NCAA Tournament game at HP Pavilion on Thursday night.

Martinez, the lone senior for the Lobos, led New Mexico with 19 points while guard Dairese Gary chipped in 15 as well as a fine defensive performance on Montana star Anthony Johnson.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan State's Tom Izzo had a tough time pushing the right buttons with some of his players this season. He suspended a couple of them, kicked one out of practice and benched another.

Izzo, though, insisted the difficulties were similar to ones he dealt with during the championship season a decade ago.

"The problems are no different," he said Monday. "When it's all said and done, the solutions will be good."

MATCHUP BREAKDOWN: New Mexico State draws No. 5 seed Michigan State, which has a long tradition of blue-collar play and toughness on the glass. No different this season, with the Spartans posting a plus-9.0 rebounding advantage. The Aggies are at minus-2.1. It is also a tough matchup for the Aggies in that their pressure defense might not have much of an affect against Spartans' star point guard Kalin Lucas, a lightning quick junior who is nearly impossible to keep out of the lane.

The opening round game is on Tuesday, March 16. Round one kicks off on Thursday and runs from March 18-19. The second round takes place on March 20 and 21. The Sweet 16 round starts on March 25 and concludes on the 26th. The Elite Eight round occurs on March 27 and 28. On April 3, the Final Four is narrowed to just two teams, and the NCAA champions will be crowned on April 5 in Indianapolis.
