March 5 (Bloomberg) -- InterMune Inc.'s experimental medicine for a deadly lung disease was reviewed more favorably by U.S. regulators than analysts expected, sending the company's shares up the most ever.

The Brisbane, California-based drugmaker jumped $8.93, or 61 percent, to $23.54 at 9:40 a.m. in Nasdaq Stock Market composite trading. Earlier, the stock had surged as much as 74 percent for the biggest gain since going public in March 2000. The stock had lost 2.7 percent in the 12 months before today.

KAUAI, Hawaii - Tsunami waves arrived in Hawaii on Saturday afternoon, as predicted, causing erratic surges in the sea, but the impact was not nearly as great as had been feared. The rising water did not appear to cause significant property damage, officials said, and a tsunami warning was canceled.

LOS ANGELES - All evacuation orders have been lifted and flash flood warnings canceled in wildfire-stripped sections of Los Angeles County as a winter storm passed through without major incident.

The Sheriff's Department said that the last of 178 homes evacuated for fear of possible mudslides in Tujunga, La Canada Flintridge and La Crescenta were called off shortly after sundown Saturday night.

One last round of rain is expected late Saturday but it is not thought to be serious enough to keep homes evacuated.

WASHINGTON - Wholesale prices shot up at double the expected pace in January, propelled higher by big increases in energy costs. The surprisingly large jump was viewed as a temporary blip and not the start of inflation problems, however.

The Labor Department said Thursday that wholesale prices rose 1.4 percent last month, reflecting higher costs for gasoline and other energy products. Private economists had expected a 0.7 percent increase.

President Barack Obama’s new budget, to be released Monday, forecasts two consecutive years of near $160 billion in war funding, far more than he hoped when elected and only modestly less than the last years of the Bush Administration.

In 2011 alone, the revised numbers are triple what the president included in his spending plan a year ago. And the strain shows itself in new deficit projections, already hobbled by lagging revenues due to the weak economy.

LOS ANGELES - The second in a series of powerful storms wreaked havoc Tuesday on California, killing a woman with a fallen tree, smashing windows and flooding coastal neighborhoods.

San Diego Sheriff's Lt. Mike Munsey said the woman was killed when a eucalyptus tree with a 10-foot diameter trunk crushed her trailer and a neighbor's in a mobile-home park near El Cajon. Forecasters said thunderstorms and what looked like tornadoes surged ashore with fierce winds in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles County beach towns and areas of Orange and San Diego counties.

WASHINGTON -- What is $1.42 trillion? It's more than the total national debt for the first 200 years of the Republic, more than the entire economy of India, almost as much as Canada's, and more than $4,700 for every man, woman and child in the United States.

It's the federal budget deficit for 2009, more than three times the most red ink ever amassed in a single year.

And, some economists warn, unless the government makes hard decisions to cut spending or raise taxes, it could be the seeds of another economic crisis.
