Caitlin (English pronunciation: /?ke?tl?n/, KAYT-lin) is a female name. Along with the many other variants of Katherine, it is generally believed to mean "pure" because of its long association with the Greek adjective katharos (pure), though the name did not evolve from this word. The name originated in Ireland as Caitlín [?kat?l?i?n?] and is the Gaelic variation of the Old French name Cateline [katlin], which was derived from Catherine, which was derived from the Ancient Greek Aikaterine. Catherine is attributed to St. Catherine of Alexandria and the Greek goddess Hecate.

Historically, only the spellings Caitlín and Caitlin (anglicised) were used. In the 20th century, however, people began pronuncing the name as KAYT-lin, which led to numerous variations in spelling, including (in alphabetical order): Caitlan, Caitlin, Caitlyn, Caitlynn, Caittlyn, Catelyn, Catlyn, Caytelyn, Kaitlin, Kaitlyn, Kaitlynn, Katelin, Katelyn, Katelynn, Kate Lynn, Kaytlynn, and Katlynne.
