Enhanced interrogation techniques, also referred to as "rough interrogation", "harsh interrogation", and "alternative set of procedures" were terms adopted by the George W. Bush administration in the United States to describe interrogation methods used by US military intelligence and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to extract information from those individuals captured in the War on Terror soon after the events of September 11, 2001.
Many of these techniques were regarded by critics, both internationally and within the United States of America, to constitute torture, or cruel and unusual punishment. In December, 2005, the United States eliminated use of these techniques by passing the Detainee Treatment Act, which limited interrogation methods to those explicitly authorized by the United States Army Field Manual.
