Nurses may also be involved in medical and nursing research and perform a wide range of clinical and non-clinical functions necessary to the delivery of health care. Nurses also provide care at birth and death. There is currently a shortage of nurses in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and a number of other developed countries.
The word "nurse" also refers to the act of breastfeeding, and this was the role of original nurses. Later on, nurses became more generalized in assisting medical technicians, so the job of breastfeeding became referred to as a "wet nurse." In other languages, the word "nurse" come from the same etymology as the word infirmary, such as in French (infirmier), or Italian (infermiere).
